What White Oak Flooring Grades Actually Measure
White oak flooring grades describe the wear surface of a finished board, not the strength of the wood underneath it. Clear Select white oak is expensive because of what is removed from the log, not because of anything added to the plank. A white oak trunk is not uniform: the outer boards are relatively clean while the centre carries knots, pith and pronounced colour variation. To fill an order that is 100% Clear, a mill must produce the other grades anyway and sell them separately. Recovery — the share of a kiln charge that meets the top grade — is the binding constraint, not sawing capacity.
Quarter-sawn and rift-sawn white oak cost more again for a mechanical reason. Producing grain at 45° to 90° to the growth rings requires squaring the log and making more, narrower passes; a higher proportion of the log leaves the line as offcut. The reward is the ribbon-like ray fleck figure that many specifiers treat as the premium white oak look. On a per-square-metre basis, quarter-sawn Select is normally the most expensive white oak floor a mill can ship.
Drying adds the third layer of cost. White oak contains closed tyloses — natural membranes that block water movement in the vessels — so it dries more slowly than red oak and needs gentler kiln schedules to avoid surface checking and honeycomb. We dry white oak to 6–9% moisture content for North American installations and 8–12% for humid markets in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and the schedule is measured in weeks rather than days. Kiln time is real cost, and it lands hardest on thick, wide, high-grade stock.

How to Specify White Oak Flooring Grades for Your Project
Specify white oak by four parameters, not one. A workable specification names the grade, the thickness and construction, the moisture content target and the finish or fire class. "White oak, high grade" is not a specification.
- Grade name plus definition. Attach the supplier's photographic grade standard to the purchase order. This is the single most effective way to avoid disputes four weeks after a container lands.
- Construction and thickness. Solid white oak is typically specified at 19 mm; engineered products are defined by wear layer, and a 4 mm sawn wear layer can be sanded and refinished roughly as many times as a solid plank, while a 0.6 mm veneer cannot. - Moisture content and acclimation. Confirm the packed moisture content against the destination market — 6–9% for North America, 8–12% for humid regions — and allow acclimation time on site before installation.
- Physical samples. A photograph cannot communicate grade. Colour rendering, screen calibration and lighting all shift the appearance of white oak, so request a physical sample box that represents the actual production grade, not a hand-picked board.

Is Rustic grade white oak lower quality than Select? No. Rustic is an appearance grade, not a performance grade. Both are cut from the same species at the same Janka hardness of approximately 1,360 lbf, and both are tested against the same standards — ASTM D4060 for abrasion resistance, CARB Phase 2 for formaldehyde limits on the engineered substrate, and EN 13501-1 Bfl-s1 for fire performance.
