AC3 AC4 AC5 Abrasion Rating: What Specifiers Must Know

AC3 vs AC4 vs AC5 comes down to three numbers: 2,000, 4,000 and 6,000 abrasion cycles under EN 13329. Those cycles are counted on a Taber abraser, and the class they produce decides whether a floor belongs in a bedroom, an open-plan office or a hotel lobby. What the AC Abrasion Rating Actually Measures

An AC rating measures the number of abrasion cycles a floor surface absorbs before the decorative layer becomes visible. EN 13329 defines the test: two abrasive wheels loaded at 500 g each run across a clamped specimen, and the operator records the first point at which the decor underneath the overlay starts to show through — the initial wear point. The published minimums are AC1 ≥ 900 cycles, AC2 ≥ 1,500, AC3 ≥ 2,000, AC4 ≥ 4,000 and AC5 ≥ 6,000.

The rating describes the overlay, not the board. A 12 mm AC4 plank and an 8 mm AC4 plank must both survive 4,000 cycles; the extra 4 mm of HDF core buys stiffness, impact resistance and acoustic mass, not abrasion cycles. This is why thickness claims and abrasion claims should never be traded against each other in a specification — they answer different questions.

Abrasion resistance is also only one of roughly a dozen performance properties in EN 13329, which sits alongside the harmonized CE marking standard for floor coverings. A floor can be AC5 and still fail on dimensional stability after humidity cycling, so the class letter is a starting filter, not a specification.

AC3 vs AC4 vs AC5: Cycle Counts, Classes and Typical Applications

The AC label maps onto the EN 13329 use-class system that European tenders quote. AC3 corresponds to classes 23 and 31, AC4 to class 32, and AC5 to class 33.

The jump from AC3 to AC5 is a 3× increase in measured cycles, and in practice it comes from the overlay formulation — the aluminum oxide content in the melamine-impregnated wear paper and the number of impregnation passes — rather than from the core. That is why an AC5 board and an AC3 board can carry identical species decors and identical click profiles while behaving very differently after five years of trolley traffic.

Some suppliers also quote "AC6" at 8,500 cycles for industrial use. European class numbering normally sold stops at class 33, so a buyer receiving an AC6 claim should ask for the test report that supports it and confirm which laboratory issued it.

AC3, AC4 and AC5 Apply to Laminate — Not to Engineered Wood Flooring

The AC scale belongs to laminate flooring tested to EN 13329, and it does not transfer to engineered wood. Engineered and solid wood floors are covered by a different European product standard, EN 14342, which sets requirements for dimensional stability, moisture content, formaldehyde class and marking rather than abrasion cycles.

Engineered wood is specified by wear-layer thickness instead: 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm or 6 mm of sawn or sliced hardwood on a plywood or multi-layer core. Coating performance is then measured with a different tool and a different unit — ASTM D4060 reports coating loss in milligrams per 1,000 cycles on a Taber abraser, so a finish is described as "12 mg loss per 1,000 cycles," never as "AC4."

Three more standards complete the picture for wood flooring buyers:

  • Reaction to fire: EN 13501-1 classification. Liancheng floors are classified Bfl-s1, which is the classification most commercial interiors in Europe require for flooring.
  • Formaldehyde emission: CARB Phase 2 limits cap hardwood plywood at 0.05 ppm and MDF/HDF at 0.11 ppm. Engineered wood with a plywood core is therefore normally specified against the 0.05 ppm figure.
  • Fiberboard cores for the Japanese market: JIS A 5905 governs MDF/HDF board properties and emission class, with F☆☆☆☆ as the lowest-emission grade accepted in Japan.

If a supplier offers you an "AC5 engineered hardwood floor," the term is being used as a marketing shorthand. Ask instead for wear-layer thickness in millimeters, the finish system, the ASTM D4060 result and the EN 14342 declaration.

Matching Abrasion Class to Real Traffic: A Specifier's Guide

Choose the abrasion class from the traffic, not from the price list, and check the failure modes the class does not cover.

  • Bedrooms and guest rooms: AC3 (class 23) at ≥ 2,000 cycles is sufficient. Household footwear and furniture legs rarely generate abrasive wear on a scale that a 2,000-cycle overlay cannot absorb.
  • Home hallways and kitchens: AC3 or AC4. Abrasive grit carried in from outside is the main wear driver, and entry mats remove more wear than an upgrade in class.
  • Open-plan offices, clinics and cafés: AC4 (class 32, ≥ 4,000 cycles). Office chairs on casters generate both abrasion and indentation, so pair the AC4 overlay with an HDF core of at least 850 kg/m³ and specify a caster-chair test result.
  • Hotel lobbies, retail and transport hubs: AC5 (class 33, ≥ 6,000 cycles). Above roughly 5,000 daily passes, the overlay is the limiting factor, and a 12 mm AC5 construction also reduces the joint stress that shows up as peaking in high-traffic entrances.

Two limits are worth stating plainly. First, abrasion class says nothing about scratch resistance — a coin dragged across an AC5 surface can still leave a mark, because scratch resistance is tested separately. Second, no AC class is waterproof; standing water reaches the core through the joint, not through the wear layer, so wet areas need sealed joints or a different product category entirely. FAQ: AC3, AC4 and AC5 Abrasion Ratings

Is AC5 always better than AC3? No. AC5 (≥ 6,000 cycles) is the correct choice above roughly 5,000 daily passes, but in a bedroom the extra aluminum oxide overlay adds cost without changing service life. Match class 23 (AC3) to domestic traffic and class 33 (AC5) to heavy commercial traffic — the standard's own use-class table exists precisely to prevent over-specification.

Do AC ratings apply to engineered hardwood or solid wood floors? No. The AC scale comes from EN 13329, which covers laminate flooring. Engineered wood is declared under EN 14342 and specified by wear-layer thickness (2 mm to 6 mm) plus coating performance measured by ASTM D4060 in milligrams lost per 1,000 cycles.

What abrasion class does a hotel lobby need? AC5, equivalent to EN 13329 class 33 at 6,000 cycles or more. Lobbies combine abrasive grit with wheeled luggage, so specify a 12 mm AC5 construction, an HDF core of at least 850 kg/m³, and EN 13501-1 Bfl-s1 reaction-to-fire performance.

Does a higher AC class mean better water resistance? No. Water resistance is governed by joint design and core swelling, not by the overlay. EN 13329 includes a swelling test measured as a percentage of thickness, and that figure — not the AC number — decides whether a floor tolerates spills in a café or kitchen.

What does FSC C012 100 mean on a flooring invoice? It is Liancheng's FSC chain-of-custody certificate number. It confirms that certified wood entering our Nanxun plant is segregated and tracked through production, which is what allows a buyer to claim FSC credit on a finished engineered wood floor.
