Solid Wood vs Engineered Wood vs SPC Flooring: How to Choose in 2026

Three constructions, three cost-to-risk profiles
Wood flooring is a composite of raw material cost, installation cost and lifecycle cost. A floor that costs USD 5 per square metre to buy can cost more than a USD 30 floor over 30 years if it fails early. Start by understanding what each construction physically is.
Solid wood flooring: one piece of real hardwood, 18–20 mm thick
A solid wood floor is a single continuous piece of hardwood, normally 18 mm (³⁄₄ inch) or 20 mm thick. Because every plank is solid timber, moisture moves through it seasonally: the board expands when relative humidity rises and contracts when it falls. Installation requires acclimatisation on site for five to seven days at 40–60% relative humidity, and kiln-dried moisture content is typically 8–12% at the factory gate.
The advantage is longevity. An 18 mm white oak floor carries roughly 40% of its thickness as usable wear material. A floor refinisher removes about 0.5–1.0 mm per sanding cycle, which means a solid oak floor can be refinished five to eight times over its life. European oak hardness in Janka-type testing sits at roughly 1,120–1,360 lbf (5,000–6,050 N)—hard enough for residential living areas but marked by heels in heavy commercial corridors. Expect service life above 50 years when the room stays between 40% and 60% relative humidity.
The cost risk is also real. Solid flooring is the most sensitive to humidity swings, is unsuitable for direct wet areas, and should not be glued over underfloor heating unless the supplier provides a documented movement-tolerant specification. Engineered wood flooring: 2–6 mm hardwood lamella over a cross-ply core
Engineered wood flooring (实木复合地板) bonds a real hardwood lamella to a dimensionally stable plywood or HDF core. The standard export specification is a 14 mm total board with a 2 mm top layer; hotel and residential premium projects frequently specify 15 mm boards with a 4 mm lamella. The structure is cross-ply, meaning each core layer runs perpendicular to the one below it, which is why a 14 mm engineered plank will stay visibly flatter than a solid 18 mm plank in the same room.
Acclimatisation time drops to 48–72 hours, and the boards tolerate surface temperatures up to 27°C, making engineered wood the most common real-wood choice over hydronic heating. The wear budget depends on the lamella: a 2 mm face allows one professional sand-and-recoat, a 4 mm face allows two to three sanding passes, and a 6 mm lamella can be treated much like a thin solid board. Realistic service life is 30–40 years in residential use, and 15–25 years in contract hospitality use with a 2 mm face.

SPC flooring: a limestone–PVC rigid core with a printed wood look
SPC (Stone Plastic Composite, 石塑地板) contains no wood at all in its core. A typical 5.5 mm SPC plank is about 60–75% limestone powder by weight, mixed with PVC and stabilisers into a rigid core with a density near 1.9–2.2 g/cm³, then topped with a printed wood-image film and a transparent polyurethane wear layer of 0.3–0.55 mm (12–22 mil).
The measurable strengths are moisture indifference and geometry. SPC can be submerged without swelling, does not need moisture-content acclimatisation, and holds its dimensions well enough that published expansion values are usually below 0.2% under wet testing. A floating click system with an attached IXPE pad installs without glue, and the boards suit surface temperatures up to 27°C.
The trade-offs are tactile and reparable. There is no real wood to sand; damaged planks are replaced, not refinished. Thinner SPC prints can telegraph subfloor unevenness, and long-term UV exposure will fade prints faster than natural wood patina. Typical residential service life is 15–25 years under the warranty terms offered by established mills. EN 13501-1 fire classification: what the certificate must say
Fire testing is a separate decision point from price. Under EN 13501-1, wood flooring products are tested to EN ISO 9239-1 and typically achieve class Dfl-s1, meaning acceptable burning behaviour and low smoke production for floor coverings; the flooring industry uses the "fl" suffix for floor-specific classes.
