Oak Flooring Sourcing Guide Starts with Species, Not Labels
A reliable oak flooring sourcing guide first separates red oak from white oak. In the United States, commercial oak is divided into two biological classes: red oak species (Quercus rubra and related species) and white oak species (Quercus alba and related species). White oak contains tyloses, which are bubble-like structures that block the pores in the heartwood; red oak lacks these structures and is therefore more permeable to water and finishing oils. French and Russian oak exported for flooring belong mostly to the white oak family, which is why millwork professionals often compare them directly with American white oak rather than with red oak.
The density difference is measurable. American red oak at 12 percent moisture content has an average specific gravity of about 0.63 and a Janka hardness around 1,290 lbf. American white oak reaches about 0.68 specific gravity and roughly 1,360 lbf. French white oak, although it comes from a different climate and slower cutting cycle, sits in the same performance range as American white oak, commonly cited near 5,900 N when measured with European Janka test methods. Russian oak is less uniform because the country spans eleven time zones; western Russian oak resembles French/European oak, while Far Eastern Mongolian oak can be harder and more brittle. A buyer that specifies only “Russian oak” without a botanical name is not yet specifying a floor.
French Oak: Even Grain, High Tannin, Predictable Colour
French oak flooring has become a premium specification for one reason: consistency. The forests that supply French white oak share a relatively uniform temperate climate, which produces moderate growth rings and an even balance between earlywood and latewood. When the same forest region supplies wine-barrel staves, the wood has already been selected for watertight grain, low sapwood content, and stable drying behavior. Flooring mills can use the same purchasing logic from the coopering industry: French oak boards with narrow, regular rings are preferred for wide planks because they move less after machining.
French oak heartwood contains high levels of tannins. This makes the wood naturally resistant to fungal attack, but it also affects finishing. Water-based coatings and iron-containing wood stains can react with tannins and create dark spots; the mill therefore applies a sealing primer or a compatible oil system before applying the topcoat. In the Liancheng laboratory, tannin-rich French oak boards are routinely tested with alkaline-resistant primers before production to control this reaction. A proper finish schedule reduces field complaints that would otherwise appear seven to fourteen days after installation.
French oak is also a common choice for wide-format flooring. A typical production spec is a three-layer engineered plank with a 3–6 mm French oak wear layer, a 7–9 mm spruce or poplar core, and a 2–3 mm balancing back layer, giving a total thickness of 14–15 mm. For this category, the wear layer is not a 0.6 mm veneer; it is thick enough to be sanded at least twice during the floor’s service life. The width generally ranges from 180 to 260 mm, and the length from 1,800 to 2,400 mm, which is why French oak wide planks are often sold as a “signature” product line.
American Oak: Red Oak Economy and White Oak Engineering
American red oak is one of the most predictable floor materials a global buyer can source. Because red oak lumber is produced in high volume in the United States and exported through established grading systems such as NHLA rules, pricing is transparent and supply is reliable. The National Hardwood Lumber Association grading system gives a common commercial language for Select, #1 Common, and #2 Common grades, which is something that Russian supply often lacks.
American red oak has an open-pore structure. This is not a defect; it is a machining and finishing characteristic. Open pores absorb oil finishes more deeply, which gives red oak a more pronounced texture under a hand-scraped or wire-brushed surface. But open pores can allow water migration if the floor is not sealed correctly. In wet areas or on slabs with high moisture emission, red oak needs a complete, three-layer coating system or a hydrophobic oil primer. The better sourcing decision is usually American white oak for bathrooms, kitchens, or installations above radiant heat.
American white oak is the species most comparable to French white oak in density, screw-holding capacity, and dimensional stability. It has a slightly higher Janka value than red oak, and its closed pore structure makes it preferred for whisky barrels, boat decking, and exterior-grade millwork. For interior flooring, the buyer chooses American white oak when red oak’s price advantage is less important than water resistance and uniformity.
From a cost standpoint, red oak has one advantage: it is more abundant and therefore less expensive at most global sawmills. Industry comparisons from past B2B purchasing seasons suggest that, for a comparable 15 mm engineered plank from the same mill, American red oak is often the starting point, American white oak runs roughly 10–20 percent higher, and French oak can command a 15–40 percent premium depending on ring density, color sorting, and FSC certification status.
Russian Oak: High Volume, Wide Variability, Legal Checks
Russia is a major exporter of oak lumber, but “Russian oak” is an umbrella term, not a single species. The most common commercial groups are:
- Western Russian European oak (Q. robur), which resembles French and Eastern European white oak.
- North Caucasian oak, which grows in a warmer climate and is often highly figured.
- Mongolian oak (Q. mongolica) from the Far East, which can be harder and more variable in colour.
Mongolian oak is the one that often surprises first-time buyers. Its latewood zone is dense, and its growth ring pattern can be dramatic, with fine earlywood pores and a hard, mineral-rich latewood band. This gives the surface a visible “cathedral” figure, but it also makes the wood more difficult to sand flat. Tooling wears faster, and the finish can appear uneven because the hard latewood absorbs less coating than the earlywood. A reliable Russian oak supplier must therefore adjust sanding grit sequence, application
